Warren Gatland says Wales are in”optimistic” disposition ahead of their quarter-final evaluation with France, with beaten Les Blues in seven from the last eight encounters.
The last time the two countries met in a World Cup in 2011, Wales suffered a narrow defeat at the point in New Zealand against France.
Gatland, who will leave his role considers his squad are in a place going into Sunday’s clash in the Showa Denko Dome
“We have trained well and prepared exceptionally well and enter this match with a lot of confidence,” Gatland said.
“As coaches and players this is what you do all of the hard work and training for. It is to attempt to get and all for moments to finals.
“As a coaching team we have had a good deal of success in large games when it has truly counted and mattered, if that has been in Grand Slam games, European Parliament or Premiership finals with Wasps, or even on Lions tours as well.
“I believe we have got a very great formula as a team about getting things straight. It is not just about the physical groundwork, it is about being emotionally right and people top two inches everybody talks about.
“If you get that right into large games it can frequently make a difference. I keep saying we are in a location that is good, we’ve prepared and the groundwork is finished.
“In another 24 hours, we will begin building nicely, but we can not play the match before we are prepared, and that is crucial.
“It’s all done in the training perspective now. It’s down to the players in the next 24 to 48 hours to truly take control and possession, and they’ve been doing that already this week”
Wales have won 19 out of the last 22 Tests, which contained a listing 14-game unbeaten run, and their 100 percent Pool D listing has been their best group stage performance in a World Cup since 1987.
Gatland also thinks his side can use their recent victories against Jacques Brunel’s team, such as a 19-24 win off at the Stade de France during the 2019 Six Nations, as motivation going in their struggle in Oita.
“We continue working hard, and approximately four of the previous seven attempts (Wales scored) from France are situations where we kept working hard to chase, and a few of their players has made an error and we’ve capitalised,” he further added.
“Defensively, (Wales defence coach) Shaun (Edwards) has been a little bit longer on edge weekly. He is pretty pumped up by a viewpoint.
“We have been working hard defensively. He wasn’t too pleased with a try against Uruguay, and that he allowed the players understand clearly from the changing room after.”
