Before asserting there is still more to come, surrey Storm director of Netball Mikki Austin has shown her excitement at the newest additions she is made for her squad ahead of this 2020 Vitality Netball Superleague year .
Austin’s first year in charge last season saw Storm record an eighth-place finish, securing along with the 26-year-old has hailed their’proactive’ summertime.
Storm have confirmed eight of their playing group to the 2020 season, which comprises three new signings that were exciting.
Austin’s side has been joined by northern Ireland Niamh Cooper whilst they secured Leah Middleton’s touch in the Queensland Firebirds.
The two most Superleague winners welcome Team Northumbria aim attack Sophie Hankin along with former Saracens Mavericks to strengthen their circle.
Stormtop appearance maker Katy Hughes has signed a new contract and she will captain the side.
Emily Gulvin and yasmin Hodge-England will be the latest players confirmed to be returning next season and also Austin set to feature in a ability, the manager of Netball of Storm is delighted with their recruitment.
“We’ve made some really key additions in court places that I think will pay real benefits for us going forward a year ago,” Austin told Sky Sports.
“That is really exciting to have this mix of returners and fresh faces in the mixture. We’ve had eight players which were announced – we have drip-fed some returners with the buzz around which was brilliant along with a few new ones which is great.
“This has been a really long procedure from May time, so we had been very proactive with this.
“We wanted to make a large push to retain the vast majority of our squad and I’m really pleased to say that we have done this. Seventy percent of the squad this year are returners and I believe that’s super important.”
With preparations before this All-Star Championships nicely underway that was Fast5, Austin insisted it was critical to ensure their recruitment was completed as soon as possible to be sure the side may focus exclusively on gelling as a unit.
The 26-year-old also paid tribute to mindset and the spirit in her group and believes that it might be a factor in a Superleague year which promises to be aggressive.
“I feel that is 1 thing we’ve been really smart on this season. Not only am I really happy with netballers and also the athletes that we’ve got, I’m more pleased with the people and the personalities.
“There seems to be a simple mix with how girls interact with one another and their mindset from the get-go was on the exact identical page.
“I feel just like that is so promising moving forward and notably from the depths of March and April if you’re mid-season and very tired, using a really good team-camaraderie is going to count for nearly wins and losses this season,” she added.
While the developments of Cooper, Middleton and Hankin gives the Storm squad an exciting refresh, they have maintained the core of the group from last season – along with Hughes in her role as captain.
The 38-year-old was an ever-present from the Storm squad because 2011 and she played a vital role at 2015 and 2016 in their back-to-back Superleague triumphs.
Austin admits that Hughes’ experience and leadership qualities are priceless and she shows that keeping her captain’s services, as well as vice-captain Parsons – was a priority.
“Katy Hughes was leading in the front as our captain last year and will last in that direction role next season with Yaz Parsons because her vice-captain,” Austin confirmed.
“I believe last season both of them really took on a lot of responsibility, Katy particularly leading in the front and also in terms of her performances likely had one of their greatest years of Netball I have seen Katy playwith.
“She really flourished with taking on this responsibility and that I mentioned to the girls as it came to re-signing, they have been basically the first two on my list.
“I had no reason not to re-sign them and no reason to not have them continue to direct. They buy what I am about and to me.
“They really care about this squad as well as the badge and what that signifies. I am so grateful to have their financing and also have them back in our squad.”
Nevertheless, Austin has teased more new arrivals within the coming days and weeks and she is determined that the new additions will play a critical role in ensuring a prosperous season for the franchise.
“There is still a couple of newbies to incorporate in the mixture and a few I am quite excited about and they have slotted into our training surroundings well.
“I think they’re going to spearhead and lead from the front in terms of their leadership and their experience on courtroom as well, which we’ve seen with the league being as tight as it was last year – which can be the difference between you winning and losing”
